Festival will mark 80th anniversary of popular cantata

The Central Conservatory of Music will hold a festival from May 23 to 27 to celebrate the 80th anniversary of The Yellow River Cantata.

Written by composer Xian Xinghai (1905–1945) in Yan’an, Shaanxi pro

vince, in early 1939, the piece was inspired by a patriotic poem by Guang Weiran, and the lyrics

were adapted for the cantata. Premiered on April 13 of the same year in Yan’an, the work became, and remains, popular.

The conservatory’s symphony orchestra, choirs and chamber music grou

ps will join in the festival with 20 concerts, including the opening concert on May 23 condu

cted by Yu Feng, president of the university. The Yellow River Cantata will be performed by young singers.

Veteran Chinese musicians and singers, including Guo Shuzhen and Wang Xiufen, will perform during the festival.

Besides concerts, masterclasses and forums will be held in Yan’an.

The music festival will also celebrate the 70th birthday of the country.

The supply of high-end talent, government investmen

t in culture and education, attractiveness for foreign investment and consumption scale are also indicators under consideration.

Shanghai has the highest infrastructure and cultural environment indexes, and the financi

al hub’s talent, technological innovation and financing indexes are in the top three of the country.

Although Beijing’s soft environment index ranked first among all Chinese cities, its hard environment index lagged behind

due to restriction of natural resources such as air quality, climate and forest coverage rate, the report said.

With the best hard environment, South China’s Shenzhen also leads on the country’s technological innovation index.

The idea of setting up such a museum came to Kang wh

ught it would be a good thing for Taiyuan to have a place for people to bury souvenirs from a failed relationship.

They acted fast and opened the museum after three months’ preparation.

The world’s first museum of broken relationships was founded in Croatia in 2006 by two artists, who

ended their four-year relationship and got the idea of setting up a museum to house their leftover personal items.

China has several museums of broken relationships now, in Nanjing, Chen

gdu, Xi’an, Wuhan, Beijing, Chongqing, Jinan, Harbin, Changsha, Guangzhou and Changchun.

China is at a stage of rapid industrialization and urbani

ization, and the issue of occupational diseases, which has been accumu

lating over the decades of extensive growth, is gradually starting to show,” Li said.

A key task of the campaign is to complete a survey of the threat of dust pois

oning, covering industries including mining, metallurgy and building materials by the end

of 2020, and to hold companies accountable for preventing the hazard, a commission document said.

The campaign also aims to have employers who generate large amounts of dust suspend their businesses and over

haul working conditions, and will ask local authorities to shut down those that cannot improve.

The campaign aims for more rigorous inspections of high-dust employers and to punish those who violate laws and regula

tions. It will also urge employers to sign contracts with their employees and join occupational injury insurance.

Most Chinese State-owned enterprises are not relevant to tra

ade negotiations. Many are in non-tradable sectors such as property develop

ment, infrastructure, or concrete. Others are basically public utilities in telecoms or power.

Some Chinese car companies are State-owned, usually by provincial govern

ments, but the car business in China is very highly competitive and foreign brands are very successful.

In any case, the continuing growth of an already large private sector should alleviate foreign concerns

about competing with State-owned companies.

During the George W. Bush administration, the US imposed tarif

fs on Chinese steel, arguing that State-owned companies had an unfair advantage. But, US ste

el companies also face higher costs because of increased environmental protection. China’s current emphasis on bu

ilding an “ecological civilization” means that that kind of polluting heavy industry will be less viable.

Some companies find niche markets in the industry by

producing specialized bicycles for health, sports and slow urban lifestyles.

Century-old bike-maker Shanghai Phoenix Enterprise (Group) Co Ltd and Tianjin Flying Pigeon Cycle Development Co are

transforming to produce sports and leisure bicycles based on the fast growth for these types of products.

The output of such bicycles priced above 1,000 yuan saw an 18.5 percent year-on-year increase to 8.43 millio

last year, up 10.5 percentage points over the previous year and accounting for about 11.5 percent of the total.

Other companies including Bike8, Onelap and Incolor continue to manufact

ure innovative bicycles by improving the intelligent and network connecting levels of their products

In the past several months, China has announced and

started to implement a “negative list” program that allows foreign co

mpanies to have 100 percent ownership in investments in all areas of the economy, excep

t for a small number of areas, such as telecoms and defense, that are explicitly prohibited.

Also, foreign investment has been simplified by creating a one-stop regulatory shop and a single application process.

These new policies will lead to greater competition within China, forcing C

hina’s companies to become more efficient and to produce higher quality products.

The Chinese government has also recently announced tax cuts and financial regulations desi

gned to help private companies. This will hasten the ongoing transition to a market-driven economy.

The conference was co-hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the China Association for Science and Technology, the U

“Learning to work together in an orderly, high trust

level, and supported by diverse interest groups will prevent conflicts among stakeholders in the South China Sea,” Santarita said.

Scientists from China and other countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative will work together to enhance scientifi

He said Asia’s emphasis on “respect for authority, respect for the environment and the discipli

ne to control the use of resources” will also see Asian leaders pursuing a more eco-friendly dev

“If there is harmony, discipline, stability and the primacy of family and com

munity over the individual, then any problem can be easily addressed,” Santarita said.
